Races go through trends just like fashion, design, food, and well, just about anything else. There are certain events that will catch on and suddenly it seems like everyone is hosting one and everyone you know wants to participate. For a while it looked like half marathons were the “hot” race of the moment. Although halfs remain very popular, there’s a different breed of race that (although they’ve been around for a while) looks to be picking up momentum as far as popularity goes.
What’s the draw of a Mud Run? Well, it’s a new challenge! Road races are great but they can get old after a while. People are looking for different ways to challenge themselves and events like the Warrior Dash, Dirty Girl, or the Madison Mud Run are providing the chance to do just that. When you show up at the starting line at a races like these you have to be prepared to tackle obstacles like scaling walls, jumping through tires and yes, crawling through mud. Just looking at pictures from any of these events and you can tell right off the bat that you’re going to get more than “just a little bit dirty.”
There’s something exciting about finishing a race and being able to physically see just how tough it was. Being covered in mud, soaking wet or even scraped up a bit can be seen a badge of honor. It also can be kind of freeing to not worry about how filthy you’re going to get. Although mud runs project an air of toughness there’s also a carefree element surrounding them as well. When’s the last time you got filthy dirty and didn’t care what anybody else thought about it? When’s the last time you did that with a group of your best friends? Tackling a race like this with a bunch of besties can be a great bonding experience. And you’re bound to have a great story to share with others after you cross the finish line.
Have you ever completed a Mud Run? What was your experience like?

I’m so excited about trying a mud run! I think it’s fun, especially as girls, to see how tough we can be. You make an excellent point about being able to physically ‘see’ the proof of that.
I haven’t not completed a mud run yet. Last year I did the dances with dirt Half Marathon. Just a trail run. This year I will be running the Tough mudder at Devils Lake. Its a little more extreme than most races. I am excited. http://www.toughmuddder.com Anyone else running it?
My friend convinced me to sign up for the Tough Mudder in July. I am simultaneously excited and terrified.
I forgot to add Tough Mudder to the list! I’ve heard it’s much more difficult than races like Warrior Dash and Dirty Girl.
Alison- I can see while you are scared but I’m sure you’ll do great!
Ooh, yes I’ve heard good things about the Tough Mudder… haven’t quite taken the leap to add that one to my schedule yet!
The Black Squirrel Filthy 5 looks like a great Spring event put on by the same group that does the Rails to Trails Marathon in the fall, can’t wait to give it a shot.
I did the Madison Mud Run this past fall, and it was hands down one of the most fun runs/races I’ve ever done! It was awesome to “see the proof” of how hard you worked on the course. I can’t wait to do another mud run!
[...] Remember when I was talking about how popular mud runs were getting? Well I finally went out and conquered one of my own. This past weekend I participated in the Dirty Girl Mud Run in Johnson Creek, WI. Held at the Milford Hills Hunting Club, the race covered three miles of trail with a bunch of fun obstacles thrown in along the way. [...]
